You definitely need Virus Protection and you probably need Spam Reduction
Domain-based protection
If you are a client of Linn Barringer Limited, with your domain hosted on LBL Hosting, you have inbuilt domain-based email virus and spam protection from Dr. Web and Spam Assassin.
SpamAssassin provides safe, reliable, spam-free email by using the latest intelligent mail filtering techniques. Don't waste time downloading and analysing junk mail on your computer. Have all your email scanned on the border of your domain and redirected to a quarantine area.
If a junk email gets through you can add your own blacklisted domains or addresses, and 'teach' Spam Assassin what you want to receive and what you do not.

Computer-based protection - Norton, or McAfee, of F-Secure
WHY? Because, if you connect to the internet, you need anti-virus software that will
- scan your incoming and outgoing emails, to prevent viruses arriving at or leaving your computer
- scan your computer for viruses from time to time either scheduled or by manually selecting to scan
- allow on-line updates to collect new virus definitions - new viruses appear almost daily, so you need to keep "up to date" protection, otherwise the new ones will 'get you.'
Email is now the most common delivery method for viruses. Some of the things that increase the risk of you receiving a virus-laden email are:
- receiving web-like (HTML) email while your email client has a Preview Pane open
- longer connection to the internet - Broadband/ADSL "always on" connection seriously increases the risk of intrusion attacks
- the greater number of people in your address book
- the greater number of people who have you in their address book
I have received literally hundreds of virus-laden emails. For a while, every one was "quarantined" but later they were simply removed by my PC's anti-virus software. Now, they are "quarantined" on mail server, without me having to even see them.
Without anti-virus software, each virus would have caused me, at the very least, some time and nuisance fixing.
If it were you, you might have had to call someone to fix your computer, which would cost you a call-out charge at the very least. And, while you were not aware the virus was on your computer, it could be using your email address book, or emails in your inbox, to find email addresses through which to propagate itself.
It is very socially responsible of you to have anti-virus software! (and there is an obvious corollary to that...)
